Autumn is well and truly upon us and I’m sure I’m not alone in noticing just how chilly it’s getting and how the dark nights are drawing in. Even though the change of season means winter is on its way, on a more positive note, it also means now is a great time to go shopping.
No matter whether you’re dark or fair, blonde or brunette, redhead or gracefully going grey, there are colourful clothes and accessories to suit everyone this season. Plus, I recently came across some research carried out by Kirsten Petersen, a specialist in colour for corporate branding, that gives a fascinating glimpse into the meaning of certain colours. It seems that wearing a colour not only makes us look good, it can say a lot about us too.
Here are just some of the colours you can expect to find in the shops right now and how you can use these colours to enhance your mood and influence everyone around you.
Black
Black is always in fashion but this season it has added interest. The new trend is for ‘black on black’, meaning that you’ll see different combinations of black textures, pattern and decoration. Wear a pair of matt black trousers with a shiny black satin blouse and you’ll be bang on-trend. Black symbolises strength, sophistication, and glamour, whilst also giving you an air of mystery. Do you want to make a certain part of your body look slimmer? Then reach for black every time. Dark, matt colours absorb light and hide lumps and bumps more successfully, whilst lighter colours trap light and accentuate them.
Blue
Strong, electric blues are the height of fashion. If you want to stand out from the crowd and this strength of colour flatters you, be bold and wear it as a top or jacket. If you prefer to play it safe then try adding a splash of cobalt blue to your outfit as a handbag or a striking piece of jewellery. According to Kirsten’s research, blue will make you appear reliable, trustworthy and committed. It also governs communication, so if you’ve got something important to say, then blue is the colour for you.
Red
Continuing the primary colour theme, red is all the rage this season. There’s a shade for everyone, whether it’s a clear, true red, deep tomato or the warmest orange. Red will really get you noticed, it’s the colour with the longest wavelength and has the effect of appearing nearer than it really is. Use the colour red to grab attention and to get people to take action. It’s a fantastic colour to use when you don't want to fade into the background. Use red to suggest speed combined with confidence and perhaps even a dash of danger. A little bit of red goes a long way!
Purple
As the season progresses you’ll see more and more purple arriving in the shops. This is such a luxurious colour and is an ideal alternative to black for that little party dress or winter coat. Purple signifies authenticity, truth and quality and suits just about everyone. There are only a few colours that flatter everyone’s skin tone and purple is one of these, so get it whilst it’s hot.
Shimmering Metallics
From the subtlest metallic detailing on buttons and belts, through to jackets and sweaters in lustrous bronze, gold or silver, this season you won’t fail to shine. If you’re too shy to go the whole hog with metallic coloured clothes, then invest in a pair of glamorous pumps or a gleaming handbag. Wearing metallic colours helps with precision and makes you more discerning – certainly a handy trait if you’re planning on shopping for your new autumn wardrobe! |
